Irina-Ana Drobot, Lecturer, PhD, Technical University of Civil Engineering, Bucharest Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to offer an example of reader-response analysis based on free associations, as well as on the visual suggestions of various elements to bring about allusive language into the process of interpretation, together with strong emotional associations in the case of short stories from Asian cultures. Indirect communication, which is specific on an everyday life basis in Asian cultures, rely on a similar mechanism, of decoding intent in an everyday life context of communication, in a way reminding of understanding a literary work. The case in point will be the short story How to Grow Bananas by contemporary Chinese author Xu Yigua, and the way in which visual language works together with indirect communication culture to bring about readers’ understanding and interpretation, as well as striking their attention through unusual details.
